Is academic proofreading allowed by German universities?
In general yes — language correction and proofreading are treated as ordinary academic support, and many faculties actively recommend it for non-native writers. What varies is the declaration rule. Some Prüfungsordnungen require you to state in your Eidesstattliche Erklärung that a proofreader was involved, others do not mention it at all. Check your own regulations before submitting, and if a declaration is required, make it — the support itself is not the problem, undisclosed support can be.
What is the difference between editing and rewriting my thesis?
Editing improves how your argument is expressed. Rewriting replaces the argument itself. We work on sentence clarity, transitions, terminology and tone, so that what you meant becomes what the page says. We do not introduce new claims, new sources, or new conclusions — because you would then be defending somebody else's reasoning in your viva. If a passage is unclear because the underlying idea is unresolved, we flag it and ask you rather than inventing a resolution.
Can proofreading really improve my grade from 2.x to 1.x?
Sometimes, and it depends entirely on why you are in the 2.x bracket. If the research is strong and the marks were lost on clarity, structure and referencing, editing addresses exactly those criteria and the improvement can be real. If the gap is in the research itself — thin methodology, weak analysis, insufficient sources — no amount of editing will close it, and anyone promising otherwise is selling you something. Send a sample and you will get an honest read on which situation you are in.
My supervisor said "language needs improvement." What does that actually mean?
It usually means one of four things, and they need different fixes. Sentences may be long and tangled so the argument is hard to follow; vocabulary may be conversational where formal terminology is expected; terminology may shift between chapters so the same concept has three names; or the writing may describe rather than evaluate. A diagnostic review identifies which of these applies to your document instead of applying a generic polish to all of it.
Is it safe to upload my dissertation to an online editing service?
The risk with any editing service is what happens to unpublished research after delivery. Ours is handled through encrypted transfer with controlled editorial access, no cloud-based AI storage, and no retention for reuse — your draft is never shared, resold, or uploaded to a database. Before choosing any provider, ask them directly what happens to your file after delivery. A vague answer is your answer.
Will editing increase or decrease my plagiarism score?
Editing does not add text from other sources, so it does not introduce similarity. It can slightly reduce a score where clumsy paraphrasing sat too close to an original wording and gets properly reworked, or where citations were formatted inconsistently. What it cannot do is remove genuine uncited borrowing — if content in your draft came from a source without attribution, the fix is a citation, not a rephrase, and we will tell you so.
Do international students in Germany commonly use proofreading services?
Very commonly, and it is not treated as unusual. Writing complex analysis in a second language is a different task from understanding the subject, and German faculties know it. Many institutions run their own writing centres for exactly this reason. Using a proofreader puts your presentation on the same footing as a native writer's while your research, your argument and your conclusions stay entirely yours.
Can someone check my thesis before viva defence?
Yes, and it is one of the better times to do it. Pre-defence review focuses on the parts examiners question most: whether the research aim, methodology and conclusions actually align, whether terminology holds steady across chapters, and whether any claim in the discussion is unsupported by your own findings. Editing at this stage is as much about spotting what you will be asked as it is about language.
How long does professional proofreading take?
Standard turnaround is three to five days for most documents, with 24-hour urgent handling available at the rates shown above. Length and level both matter — a 10,000-word Master's thesis moves faster than a 60,000-word doctoral manuscript with a technical vocabulary that has to stay consistent throughout. You receive a confirmed turnaround along with your fixed quote, before any work starts.
Is AI proofreading good enough for academic theses?
For catching typos, it is fine. For academic editing, it is unreliable in a specific way: it smooths language confidently without understanding your field, so it flattens necessary technical precision, "corrects" discipline-specific terms that were already right, and occasionally rewrites a hedged claim into an absolute one you never intended to make. There is also the declaration question — if your regulations restrict AI use, running your thesis through a rewriting tool may itself need disclosing.
What if my thesis is already written but feels "not polished"?
That instinct is usually accurate and usually specific, even when it feels vague. Most often the draft was written in stages over months, so chapter one and chapter five sound like different people, transitions were added late, and terminology drifted along the way. A full read-through by one editor fixes precisely that kind of inconsistency, because the problem is not in any single sentence — it is across the document.
Can you remove AI from my thesis so it does not get flagged?
We can rewrite AI-shaped passages into your own academic voice — varied sentence rhythm, specific reasoning instead of generic connectors, and terminology consistent with your field. What we will not do is promise a particular detector score, because those tools are probabilistic, they update without notice, and two of them will happily give the same paragraph opposite verdicts. And if undeclared AI use breaches your Prüfungsordnung, editing does not fix that — declaring it does.
Why does my thesis get flagged as AI when I wrote every word myself?
Because detectors measure predictability, not authorship. Writing in a second language tends to produce safer, more uniform sentence structures, repeated connectors, and textbook vocabulary — statistically the same fingerprint a language model produces. Heavy paraphrasing from a translator does the same thing. Editing fixes it by varying rhythm and making the reasoning specific, without touching what you actually argued.
Is it allowed to use ChatGPT to improve my thesis language in Germany?
There is no single national rule — it depends entirely on your institution. Some German universities permit AI for language polish or translation provided you declare it, others prohibit it in graded submissions altogether, and a growing number now require a specific statement in the Eidesstattliche Erklärung. The binding answer is in your module handbook and Prüfungsordnung. If you are unsure, ask your supervisor in writing before you submit, not after.
My supervisor thinks my chapter is AI-generated. What should I do?
Do not rewrite it in a panic and do not delete your drafts. Gather your evidence first — version history in Word or Google Docs, your notes, your reading list, file timestamps. Most German faculties treat a detector alert as grounds for a conversation, not as proof, and you will usually be invited to explain your process. We can review the chapter, identify which passages read as machine-shaped and why, and document what changed so you have something concrete for your Prüfungsausschuss.
How do I know whether I need proofreading or deep editing?
Use your feedback as the guide. If nobody has questioned your structure or argument and you simply want a clean, error-free submission, proofreading is enough. If a supervisor has mentioned clarity, precision, flow, or writing that reads descriptively rather than analytically, that is editing territory. Unsure? Send one representative section — not the polished introduction — and you will get a recommendation for the smaller service if the smaller service is what the document needs.
