A German thesis moves from the research problem to the conclusion in a clear progression. Exact requirements differ by university, faculty and programme, so your Prüfungsordnung, faculty guidelines and supervisor always take priority over any template — including this one.

Accurate referencing shows which ideas, evidence and sources built your research — and separates your analysis from everyone else's. The required style varies between universities, faculties and programmes, so follow the one your department specifies rather than the one you find easiest.
APA appears across psychology, education and the social sciences. Harvard is the general author-date option. Chicago turns up in the humanities and research-heavy subjects, MLA in literature and languages, and OSCOLA in some legal contexts — though German law programmes often keep their own faculty rules.
Footnote-based German citation is standard wherever sources are documented in detail at the bottom of the page.
Direct quotations, paraphrased ideas, theories, statistics, datasets, figures and tables all need referencing. Your Literaturverzeichnis must correspond exactly with what is cited in the text, formatted consistently from the first page to the last.
