A master thesis poor grade in Germany is usually final if you passed: most regulations do not let you resubmit a passed Masterarbeit to raise the mark. Your realistic options are to read both Gutachten, request Einsicht into your exam file, test whether a Widerspruch has grounds, and rework weak chapters for publication, a PhD application or a permitted repeat.
The details depend on three things: passed or failed, what the two examiners wrote, and what your own Prüfungsordnung says. We cover each, then show how to rebuild the chapters of a mathematics thesis that typically cost marks.
What a master thesis poor grade means in Germany
German universities grade on a scale from 1.0 (sehr gut) to 4.0 (ausreichend), with 5.0 (nicht ausreichend) meaning the thesis has failed. A 3.3 or 3.7 feels like a poor grade after two years of good coursework, but legally it is a pass. That distinction controls everything that follows.
A pass, even with a poor master thesis grade, normally closes the examination. There is usually no mechanism to hand in an improved version for a better mark. Some universities offer grade-improvement attempts for module exams, but these rarely extend to the thesis. A fail is different: most regulations allow one repeat attempt, often with a new topic.
So before you respond to a master thesis poor grade by rewriting anything, find out which situation you are in. We regularly hear from students who spent a month polishing a passed thesis, only to learn the examination office would never accept a second version.
Read the Gutachten before you do anything else
The Gutachten is the written assessment from each examiner. Most German master programmes use two: the Erstgutachter (usually your supervisor) and a Zweitgutachter. The final grade is commonly the average of both marks.
What the two reports usually tell you
A Gutachten is rarely long: often one to three pages on the research question, literature, method, results and presentation. Read it twice. On the second pass, sort every criticism into two columns: substance (a gap in a proof, an unjustified assumption, thin experiments) and form (notation, structure, citation style, language).
In mathematics theses we see a recurring pattern. The supervisor’s report praises effort and criticises depth, while the second examiner focuses on rigour and presentation. If both reports name the same weakness, that is the main cause of your poor grade and your first rework target.
Requesting Einsicht into your exam file
Einsicht in die Prüfungsakte means inspecting your examination file, including the reports and any marginal notes. Many universities grant it on request through the Prüfungsamt. Ask in writing, keep a copy, and take notes during the inspection.
What your Prüfungsordnung usually allows after a poor grade
Rules differ by university and even by programme, so treat this table as a map of what is common, not a statement of your rights. Your own Studien- und Prüfungsordnung, and the Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung on your grade notice, take priority over anything written here.

How long do you have to file a Widerspruch?
If your grade notice contains instructions on legal remedies, the deadline for a Widerspruch is often one month from receipt. Without those instructions, the period can be considerably longer. Some federal states have removed the Widerspruch step for exam decisions altogether, so read your notice carefully and ask the Prüfungsamt or student advisory service.
A Widerspruch only succeeds on grounds such as procedural errors, factual mistakes in the assessment or criteria applied inconsistently. Disagreeing with academic judgement is not enough. Talk to the AStA or your university’s legal advice service first.
How to rework a mathematics thesis that lost marks
Perhaps you passed and want the work good enough for a paper or a PhD application. Perhaps you failed and are preparing the repeat. Either way, rework in the order examiners read.
Take a cohort we see often: applied mathematics master’s students writing about 5,000 words, roughly 20 pages, on an optimisation problem such as the split feasibility problem, with APA referencing. (For a longer project, see how to plan a 10,000-word master thesis.) Behind a weak master thesis grade in this kind of work, the same five chapters usually sit.
The problem statement
Examiners want the problem defined formally within the first few pages. For the split feasibility problem, that means: find a point x in a closed convex set C such that Ax lies in a closed convex set Q, where A is a linear operator between the two spaces. State if you work in finite-dimensional space or a general Hilbert space, because convergence results differ.
Literature and the method chapter
A thin literature section is the most common substance criticism we see. For this topic, the chapter should trace the problem from its introduction by Censor and Elfving in 1994 to Byrne’s CQ algorithm, which iterates a projection onto C after a gradient-type step built from the projection onto Q. Then show where your work sits: relaxed variants with half-space projections, self-adaptive step sizes, or applications such as signal recovery and radiation therapy planning. Don’t list papers. Show which open question your thesis addresses.
Proofs
Markers in mathematics read proofs line by line. Common deductions: a step-size condition stated in the theorem but never used in the proof, a convergence claim that holds only in finite dimensions presented as general, or a lemma borrowed without citation. Rewrite each proof so every inequality has a named justification, such as firm nonexpansiveness of the projection, and check that your step-size bound uses the correct operator norm of A.
Numerical experiments
Twenty pages leaves little room, so one well-designed comparison beats four careless ones. Fix the test problems, report iteration counts and CPU time, state the stopping criterion, and compare at least two methods under identical settings. Honestly, a single table with a clear stopping rule often impresses a second examiner more than a page of colourful figures.
Notation and referencing
Notation drift is the silent mark-killer. If the operator is A in chapter two and T in chapter four, examiners notice. Build a notation table and search the document for every symbol. APA is unusual in mathematics, but if your faculty required it, apply it consistently, including in theorem attributions. Our mathematics thesis specialists often find that fixing notation alone removes half of the second examiner’s formal comments.
Master thesis rework checklist
Use this list after any master thesis poor grade, in order. Each step depends on the one before it.
- Confirm with the Prüfungsamt whether your thesis counts as passed or failed, and what that allows.
- Note every deadline on your grade notice, including any Widerspruch period.
- Request Einsicht and copy or summarise both Gutachten.
- Sort each criticism into substance or form.
- Rewrite the problem statement as a formal definition with stated assumptions.
- Rebuild the literature chapter around the open question, not a list of authors.
- Re-derive each proof and name the justification for every step.
- Rerun experiments with fixed parameters, a stated stopping rule and a fair comparison.
- Unify notation across chapters and check every citation against your style guide.
- Ask someone outside your group to read the abstract and introduction cold.
Where outside help fits, and where it does not
Asking for a rewrite to lift a poor thesis grade misreads how German examination works: a passed thesis will not be re-marked, and a repeat must be your own independent work under the Eidesstattliche Erklärung you sign. A specialist can explain why a proof fails, show a model method chapter, or edit a draft you wrote.
Our master thesis support in Germany works on exactly that basis: guidance, model sections and feedback, with you responsible for how you use them and for your university’s rules. For a revised draft, an academic Lektorat for thesis drafts covers language, structure and citation consistency without changing your mathematics. If the feedback misses something you need, our free revision terms explain what we redo. Files and identities stay confidential. Start with the deadlines on your grade notice this week, because a missed Widerspruch window cannot be reopened.
Frequently asked questions
Can I resubmit my master thesis if I passed with a bad grade?
Usually not. Most German examination regulations treat a passed Masterarbeit as a completed exam, so there is no route to submit an improved version for a higher mark. Check your own Prüfungsordnung and ask the Prüfungsamt directly before you invest time in a rewrite.
What happens if I fail my Masterarbeit in Germany?
A failed thesis can usually be repeated once. Many regulations require a new topic and a registration deadline for the second attempt. If the second attempt also fails, you may lose the right to complete that degree programme in Germany, so read the repeat rules carefully and plan the new attempt with your supervisor early.
How do I get to see my thesis Gutachten?
Ask the Prüfungsamt in writing for Einsicht in die Prüfungsakte. Many universities grant inspection of the examiners’ reports and notes, sometimes only within a fixed period after the grade is published. Some allow copies, others only reading on site, so record every criticism exactly as written.
Is a Widerspruch worth it for a 3.7 thesis grade?
Only if you have concrete grounds. A Widerspruch can succeed where there were procedural errors, factual mistakes in the Gutachten or inconsistent criteria. It will not succeed simply because you think the work deserved more. Speak to your university’s legal advice service or the AStA before filing, and file within the deadline on your notice.
Can someone rewrite my failed thesis for the second attempt?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who offers. The repeat attempt must be your independent work, and you sign a declaration saying so. Legitimate support means guidance on structure, explanation of where proofs fell short, model sections to learn from, and editing of your own text.
Is it worth reworking a master thesis poor grade if I cannot change the mark?
Often, yes. A reworked thesis can become a journal paper, a writing sample for PhD applications or the base for a better second attempt. Admissions committees read the work, not just the grade. Fixing the proofs and experiments that lost marks turns a master thesis poor grade into evidence that you can respond to criticism.
